Limpopo police murder and suicide: PSA calls for preventative measures

The Public Servants Association (PSA) is deeply concerned following an incident where a Police Sergeant in Limpopo allegedly murdered a senior colleague before taking his own life.

This event has left the community and the sector in shock and mourning. The PSA extends sincere condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends affected by this devastating loss. The Union stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time and calls for their support.

Considering this tragic event, the PSA urges the employer to take immediate, proactive measures to prevent such incidents. The PSA recommends that mental-health support be provided and for the employer to implement comprehensive programs that include regular counselling, stress management workshops, and access to mental-health professional for all employees. Conflict-resolution and communication training should be mandatory to assist employees in managing disputes and tension in a constructive manner. In addition, employee-assistance programs should be strengthened to offer confidential support services for employees dealing with personal and work-related challenges.

The PSA is committed to advocating for the well-being and safety of public servants. The PSA urges the employer to prioritise these recommendations to create a safer and more supportive environment for all employees.
